COPE and Climbing Instructor Training

The Atlanta Area Council COPE/Climbing Program offers L1 Instructors Training several times a year whether it be in a large event or a small specific training event. Trained instructors provide support to COPE/Climbing Directors that run programs for the scouts at summer camp, council & district wide event as well as in our remote adventures. Trained leaders assist in Merit Badge instruction, COPE instruction and other fun and useful activities throughout the year.

The Atlanta Area Council Prides itself on having qualified and helpful volunteers to assist all programs. The climbing program is a vital to making adventures for our scouts. With trained volunteers we can offer exceptional climbing, COPE, and caving adventures. These programs help develop our youth in the methods of scouting and provide an exciting adventure that will live on for a lifetime and help them encourage their children the value of scouting.

L1 COPE/Climbing CIT - Youth Going through the training program if under the age of 18 will receive a Counselor in Training Card (CIT). This allows them to work under the supervision of a directors if they are working at summer camp or if they volunteer for a natural rock event. The course consists of everything the normal L1 training provides in each skill set.

L1 Climbing / COPE InstructorThe training for an L1 instructor consists of 2 parts.

Part 1(COPE/Climbing Foundation)- This section consists of 17 hrs. of training required done over a weekend Friday night to Sunday afternoon. The training and covers Safety, Rigging, Equipment, Inspections and dealing with participants.

Part 2 (Climbing Practical)- Consist of 9.5 hrs. One day of practical rigging and scenarios in a natural rock location putting the practical applications to work and using the skills learned over the previous weekend.

Part 2 (COPE Practical)- Consists of 16.5 hrs. One weekend of practical rigging, scenarios, rescue skills and sequencing and other skills at one of the councils COPE facilities.

Information:

  • Check-in Friday evening at COPE/Climbing Pavilion at 4:30 PM. 
  • Class takes place Friday evening, Saturday all day, and Sunday till 4:30 PM. 
  • Scouts/Adults must have their campsite packed up Sunday morning before arriving for the merit badge class. 
  • Bring a refillable water bottle
  • Bring your Scouting America Annual Health & Medical Record Parts A & B along with a copy of the front & back of your insurance card.  
  • Campsites are reserved for this event - please email camping@atlantabsa.org to reserve your spot.  

 

Notes: Level 1 & Level 2 Climbing Instructor Training will be held Friday through Sunday, at Bert Adams Scout Camp (Friday evening and Sunday). Upon completion of the course you will receive your Climbing Instructor Level 1 card.
