A Scout Steps In When It Matters Most
A Scout Steps In When It Matters Most
While selling popcorn outside a Lowe’s on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, 16-year-old Life Scout Stefano of Troop 370 witnessed a car accident at the store’s entrance. He immediately ran to the scene to check on the people involved.
Stefano quickly assessed the situation and asked for 911 to be called. He immediately noticed the driver of one of the vehicles, a red car stopped in the middle of traffic, was trapped inside, her door crumpled from the impact and clearly in distress.
Carefully watching for oncoming traffic, Stefano approached the vehicle, introduced himself, and asked permission to help. Drawing on his CPro first responder training - earned while serving on staff at Woodruff Summer Camp - he forced the jammed door open using his hands and foot. After checking the driver for injuries and confirming she had no neck or back pain, Stefano helped her out of the car and got her to the sidewalk, away from traffic.
He retrieved a red medical bag from the car and stayed with the driver, helping keep her calm while gathering important medical information to share with first responders. After briefly checking on the other driver, who had minor injuries, Stefano returned to remain with the woman until police and EMS arrived.
When first responders reached the scene, Stefano clearly explained what he had witnessed and relayed the medical information he had gathered. He continued assisting until both drivers were safely transported and the scene was cleared.
Officer Pugh of the Chamblee Police Department later commended Stefano for his bravery, clear communication, and decisive action under pressure. In recognition of his conduct, the Chamblee Police Department named him January 2025 Citizen of the Month.
Earlier this year, Stefano was also awarded the Meritorious Action Award by Scouting America, recognizing his willingness to step forward and help when it mattered most. His actions reflect the best of Scouting - being prepared, staying calm, and putting others first!
