Heroism Award Honors Tenderfoot Scout Mason’s Extraordinary Courage
When Tenderfoot Scout Mason of Troop 241 in Canton earned the Lifesaving and Meritorious Action Award earlier this month, he accepted it with the same quiet confidence he shows in every part of Scouting. But the recognition marks an extraordinary moment - one that demonstrated the strength of character found in even our youngest Scouts.
On February 24, 2024, Mason was just 10 years old and still a Cub Scout with Pack 1153 when an ordinary afternoon of fishing with his grandmother in the North Georgia mountains turned into a life-or-death emergency. While casting her line along the edge of a deep pond, Mason’s grandmother, Connie, slipped on the steep bank and slid into the water. The weight of her jacket and the slope of the shoreline pushed her quickly away from safety. She tried to swim, but exhaustion overtook her, and within moments, she was face down and unresponsive.

From about 20 feet away, Mason saw what was happening and acted without hesitation. He told his younger sisters to stay back and get help, then jumped into the water. Reaching his grandmother, he worked to keep her head above water while shouting for help, shifting tactics again and again. Determined to save his grandmother, he dove beneath her, pushing upward with his hands to lift her head into the air while taking quick breaths between efforts.
Through sheer will and courage, Mason managed to move her to the shoreline, where he rolled her onto her side and struck her back until she began to cough and breathe again. Moments later, their grandfather reached the scene and helped pull her fully from the water. Thanks to Mason’s swift action, her life was saved.
Today, Mason’s grandmother is healthy and back to enjoying time outdoors with her grandson. His actions that day reflect the very best of the Scout Oath and Law: being helpful, brave, and prepared when it matters most. As his family shared, few children his age could have done what he did - but Mason didn’t hesitate.
Now a Tenderfoot Scout, Mason brings that same spirit to Troop 241. He loves learning new skills, teaching friends in his neighborhood about camping and the outdoors, and living out the values he has embraced since his first days as a Lion Scout. His award is not only a recognition of heroism, but a testament to the power of Scouting to prepare young people to meet real-world challenges with calmness, courage, and heart.
Congratulations, Mason! Your actions embody what it means to be a Scout, and your story will continue to inspire others for years to come.
