Caving Programs
The Atlanta Area Council has Caving! The adventures are from a simple horizontal caving to something a lot more challenging as Vertical Caving. See some of the most spectacular sights the underground word has to offer. Underground water falls to the stalactites and stalagmites. This is an adventure for the most enthusiastic explorer to weave your way down narrow corridors and pop through a small squeeze into a vast chamber of wondrous beauty. See the wildlife that lives in the dark. Our Georgia back yard has many of these wonderous caves that are monitored and protected by the Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc. (SCCI)
Horizontal Caving- Are you scared of the dark? Come tame the fear of dark places and seek out some of the regions best kept secrets in a horizontal caving adventure. This adventure will introduce you safely and softly to the spectacular world of caving in limestone caverns and rock formations. This adventure can allow you to check out what lives and grows below the surface of the earth and can add to your Nature & Geology Merit Badges too. The caving adventure is accompanied by well trained caving instructors with a wealth of knowledge and expertise. This should be one of your troop or crews top ten adventures.
Vertical Caving- This is an exciting way to venture down into the deep. This is a more demanding adventure where you will descend into the cave from a rope and exit the way you entered. There are some details that need to be addressed if this is the adventure for you! Training will be done before your trip can proceed. Good physical strength is required to pull yourself back to the surface. This will be evaluated at the training session which should only take one weekend to train you in safe caving practices and skills needed to be a true caver!
Caving Permits- We are required to have a caving permit which is filled out by the Troop or Crew, and we would ask that you can donate to the SCCI for there diligent work to preserve our Georgia cave systems. ($10.00 per adult & $5.00 per youth) https://saveyourcaves.org/ * Note you are not required to donate for the use of the cave or the granting of the permit. As scouts we do our best to leave things better than when we arrived.
